Chapel Chalk

The chalk stone walls of the Old Chapel at Chittern had been re pointed with a very hard sand cement mortar during its conversion to a village house.

The chalk walling had been laid in a lime chalk and grit mortar. The sand cement mortar used during the refurbishment was de-bonding, unsightly and unsuitable. It would eventually lead to water ingress and spalling.

The Building Lime Company matched the existing chalk mortar with Castle NHL2 Hydraulic Lime and lime putty mixed with graded chalk and gritty sand and supplied new chalk blocks cut to size.

The contractor removed all of the de-bonding sand cement and re-pointed the chalk blocks with the chalk.
